Sutherland Hussey submit St Andrews housing plans
Sutherland Hussey has submitted plans to Fife Council for the delivery of a St Andrews housing project on behalf of Eastacre Investments.

The submission comes after the appointment of the practice following an invited design competition which saw Reiach & Hall, Cre8 Architecture and Nicoll Russell Studios lose out.

Arranged around a series of public and private courtyards the scheme incorporates six townhouses, four maisonettes and four flats at West Burn Lane; each of which has been given detailed horizontal layering at ground, first and second storey levels.

Each block will be recessed from the lane at ground level before cantilevering out on the first floor to create a covered threshold and continue the rhythm of existing recesses and doorways. Upper storeys are again stepped back to allow light into the narrow lane.

In a statement Sutherland Hussey said: "By inviting several firms to develop proposals, Eastacre’s ambition was to select a design that can provide high quality contemporary houses and apartments in the rich and complex conservation area. The West Burn Lane site, located in the heart of the university town adjacent to the School of Psychology and Bute Medical Building, is an important part of the Rigg structure of the medieval plan. "

The project is pencilled in for completion in August 2014.
