Fairfield Shipyard is shipshape
Glasgow’s most famous shipyard, Fairfields, is set fair for a residential makeover after detailed planning permission was recommended for approval by Glasgow City Council.

Designed by Honeyman and Keppie in 1890 the Fairfield shipbuilding office, within the Central Govan Conservation Area, has been described as the finest in Britain and is Grade A listed.

Developer Clydeport and architect ADF are on course to restore many aspects of the original fabric of this building whilst creating 60 apartments on Govan Road and Elder Street.  Set on both sides of the listed Fairfield building, the ADF-designed housing element picks up on the ‘towers’ of the Fairfield building and the traditional corners of the surrounding tenements while presenting a contrasting contemporary response.

The public will be allowed access to heritage elements within the site such as the wood-panelled ornate interiors and a fully-restored map-room that is to become a new exhibition and interpretation space.
