Granton Station platforms to welcome first new arrivals in a century
August 18 2025
Disused platforms at the former Granton Station in Edinburgh, which has recently been transformed into a hub for creatives, are to be landscaped as part of improvement works to the adjacent Station Square.
7N Architects and RankinFraser are working on behalf of the City of Edinburgh Council to enhance the setting of the B-listedB-listed station, closed in 1925, by integrating a public art installation to the north and south.
Complementing the refurbished surroundings, the work will see both island platforms refurbished, retaining their engineering brick and concrete kerbs. Newly introduced soft landscaping will include sculptures and ornamental shrubs to create a layered effect.
In a heritage statement, the applicants noted: "The recent refurbishment of the Granton Station building and surrounding public realm has positively reinforced the setting of the railway platforms. However, this development has further highlighted the deterioration of the railway platforms themselves. Their poor condition currently detracts from their functional contribution to the surrounding context; negatively impacting the setting of the Granton Station building."
Opening up access to the platforms was discounted based on the visual and physical impact arising from the introduction of stairs, ramps and fencing.
