Artists arrive at a former Granton Station

A former railway station in Granton has been transformed into a space for artists at the behest of the City of Edinburgh Council.
The £4.5m project has seen ADP transform the former Granton Gasworks Station into a creative hub for businesses, social and cultural enterprises and the local community. Operated by arts charity Wasps, the 6,000 sq ft space retains its industrial charm, featuring glazed brick and a metal trussed roof, while introducing modern amenities and a large, flexible communal space for exhibitions and events.
These are served by a new accessible lift and central staircase together with improved thermal performance, heating, lighting, and natural ventilation. A railyard-inspired public square has also been introduced and reconditioned gas lamps frame a new entrance door and canopy.
Siobhan Davitt, director at ADP’s Edinburgh studio said: "As a transformative piece of placemaking it showcases the stations historic status and provides a much needed gateway to the wider Granton community. ADP also designed an innovative SUDS scheme expressed as a series of rain-gardens within the main plaza."
Operated as a station from 1900-1940, and last used as an administrative building for the gasworks until the 1990s, the building includes oversized glazing over the track area - originally open to the elements. Deep reveals and dark grey replica windows reflect the station’s Edwardian form.
