Old meets new in Charing Cross as latest student housing plans emerge

A second and final public consultation on plans to turn a mixed commercial frontage on a busy Glasgow Street into student housing has taken place.

Albert Investment and ThreeSixty Architecture propose to build out land at 93-113 St George's Road, replacing three buildings with a unified replacement block that retains only the facade of a former bakery.

A stepped frontage will present to the busy M8 to provide approximately 300 student rooms without overpowering adjacent tenements, with ancillary spaces including a gym, cinema, yoga studio, green courtyard and roof terrace.

In a statement, the architects said: "The design retains the distinctive St George’s Studios façade, blending it with blonde and red brick tones and slate-grey cladding inspired by surrounding tenements. The proposed footprint is more condensed than the current built form which creates generous new landscaped areas and improves connectivity through secure, green lanes."

External amenity is led by a newly formed northern lane, demarcated by a portal frame. This will be complemented by a roof terrace on the north west corner and residents may be permitted access to the courtyard roof, subject to viability checks.

Now that looks pretty good! Massing is fantastic - bit unclear whats happening with the levels though as they blend old and new.
