Interwar bakery facade to be spared in student flats plan

The developer behind proposals to demolish an unlisted interwar bakery in Glasgow has vowed to retain its facade in the delivery of new student accommodation.

St George's Studios, along with neighbouring properties at 93-113 St George's Road, had been trailed for demolition during earlier pre-app discussions.

Latterly used as office space, the building has suffered from low occupancy post-Covid but the applicant ruled out a retrofit-first approach on the grounds of fire safety, energy performance, layout constraints, a lack of daylight and issues around access.

It is proposed to retain the brick facade as part of an expanded structure, accessible by a newly routed side lane into the interior of the city block.

Commercial ground floor uses including a snooker hall, grocery store, gym and cafe are also planned.

Albert Investments has assembled a design team including ThreeSixty Architecture, Woolgar Hunter and Atelier Ten for the project, a final consultation for which is scheduled for 7 August at Woodside Library between 15:00 and 19:00.
