Farmhouse extension is greater than the sum of its parts

Order has been restored to the jumbled rear facade of a B-listed East Lothian farmhouse with the completion of a modern extension.

Pend Architects have harmonised a patchwork of historic additions to the historic Whitberry property through a linear new build that rationalises the interior layout and opens up access to the garden.

Featuring a fluted stone wall, a reference to the pantile roof, timber sliding doors and full-height glazing, the extension knits together existing brick and sandstone elements into a more cohesive whole.

Pend Architects associate Ben MacFarlane, said: "We began by analysing what it was that gave the existing property so much character and charm, to enable us to learn how to preserve and enhance this through our own interventions.

"With trusting and supportive clients, we pushed the boundaries of what could be achieved and created a playful and contextually appropriate solution for the rear elevation which sat comfortably alongside its predecessors and facilitated a modern family lifestyle."

Linking visually to the main house through a glass-to-glass corner and a small courtyard in the remaining void, the extension provides practical family accommodation with a new kitchen serving as the heart of the home.

Always a challenge when the utility back quarters are where the modern family want to live in basically a room and kitchen conversion tacked on the rear of a property whose elegance is at the front.

Remove the square glass box and the whole thing looks really cohesive and beautiful.
