Planners clear Cameron Toll hotel in diversification drive

Plans for a 109-bed hotel to kickstart the regeneration of Edinburgh's Cameron Toll shopping centre have been recommended for approval by a planning committee.
The Liberton Road hotel, which includes a new pedestrian route to the centre, won approval on the condition that steps are taken to reduce overlooking of the neighbouring Dunedin School.
In a statement, the committee praised the activation of a former car park and climate mitigation measures of the 3DReid design, writing: "The revised scheme will deliver a sustainable and well-designed development with activation at street level."
The decision was welcomed by Andrew Moffat, managing director of developer Hunter REIM, who commented: “I’d like to thank the committee and the council for the quality of the very considered debate and the time taken to carefully consider all the issues. I’d also like to say that we’ll happily accept the condition to reduce the oversight of our neighbour Dunedin School.
“We look forward to bringing forward those proposals forward in due course as part of a wider public consultation on the future vision for improving Cameron Toll following discussions with local partners including Dunedin School.”
Opened in 1984 the shopping centre has been struggling with a drop in custom, prompting moves to diversify the site use.
