Food & drink makeover ensures a sleepy Cupar landmark is full of beans

A B-listed Cupar landmark, previously home to a nightclub, is to be refurbished as a restaurant and commercial units while being joined by a new drive-thru coffee outlet.
The Watts of Cupar Building has lain empty since 2019, during which time it has been placed on the Buildings at Risk Register and dates from 1814 when it originally opened as the town jail.
To secure its future and encourage people to spend time in the building once more, Cameron Laird Architects (CLA) and Stone Acre Ventures propose to demolish the nightclub extension and a disused auction mart to the rear while repairing the facade and slate roof.
In a design statement, CLA wrote: "Given the limiting and poor quality interior of the existing building, extensive structural alterations are proposed to “open up” the interior of the building to create a viable and attractive development for the bar/restaurant to meet modern occupier requirements.
"Entry to the new bar/restaurant will be via a new fully glazed entrance area proposed to replace the subsiding and deteriorating small crenellated gable extension to Station Road."
A new build extension will create an additional two commercial units alongside a new drive-thru cafe finished in a contrasting flat-faced aluminium wall plank façade system with timber cladding and full-height glazed curtain walling.
