B-listed rotunda to become a well-rounded entertainment venue

A distinctive brick rotunda close to the Hydro entertainment venue is Glasgow, is to become a supporting act for its big brother under new plans filed by the Forrest Group.

The North Rotunda on Tunnel Street, the twin of an identical structure on the south bank of the Clyde, once served as a portal to a pedestrian passageway below the river but is now set to become a multi-function entertainment venue.

New plans by the commercial property developer show a ground-floor bar and restaurant sitting below a unique function room topped by a domed roof, augmented by a new single-storey extension and access stairs. Fabric repairs to the B-listed structure will be carried out in tandem with this work including a feature cupola.

Speaking to Urban Realm Forrest Group director Keith Vallance said: "We have a full delivery team in place with ICA being the architect, lead designer and interior designer on the scheme.

"We have withdrawn the earlier fabric repairs application and now included these works within the full planning application that we submitted on 5th March. We felt that a comprehensive application was required to provide a full appreciation of our proposals."

Concept designs show a 'heavy' industrial aesthetic for the new additions comprising textured rusticated metal and finished concrete to complement the cast iron and sandstone details of the existing building.

Interesting that they are looking to upgrade an existing operation that would not appear to be at deaths door.

Suggests that there is money to be made in the area with the SECC crowds.

I wonder what Glesga taxi drivers will call it when it is finished?

The Tardis -- seems bigger on the inside than its external persona would suggest.

The Macca as in Frank Macca -- his kind of place ...
The proposed clientele -- going by the toilet split -- would appear to be very heavy on the knicker chucker side of the Hydro audience.

Or the blokes they will be chasing are all under 30 with bladders the size of a 5 gallon drum.

The area around the crane needs utilised for smaller entertainment venues etc - something like Springfield quay..
Make the area somewhere that people would want to visit other than attending the SECC .
