B-listed former tunnel shaft entrance to be adorned by a new cupola

A distinctive former tunnel shaft entrance in Glasgow is to be given a historically accurate makeover in a bid to improve its thermal performance.

Latterly in use as an entertainment venue but now closed the North Rotunda has been converted internally to provide five floors of accommodation, which will be retained.

Planned works to the North Rotunda by ICA instead focus on reslating the roof, reinstating a full ring of roof lights and building a new cupola. Masonry repairs and cleaning will also be carried out as required.

Outlining their design intent ICA wrote: "It is the intention to restore the historic characteristics of the roof which would once again mirror the features of the Southern Rotunda."

When complete the project will reveal the dome structure by removing ceilings and plant equipment, exposing it internally.
