Haghill death mask to resurrect a historic school

Haghill Primary is set to rise again under plans by Milnbank Housing Association and Grant Murray Architects (GMA) to death mask the B-listed school.

Residential infill for the full urban block would see the site brought back to life following the full demolition of the school in 2021, leaving only a boundary wall and janitor's house still standing.

Fortunately, key masonry was salvaged at this time with an eye towards eventual reinstatement. Outlining this process the architects wrote: "GMA had previously worked closely with this same stonemason to save the original shell of the Steiner School building in Glasgow’s west end, as part of another recent development. All parties worked collectively to carefully take down & salvage large sections of the original Haghill Primary school building (at significant cost), with the intention of rebuilding or reincorporating these features within new housing proposals; based on the 2015 concepts for the site."

This material extends to decorative stonework, cills and lintels as well as full sections of facade and a rusticated base course to be re-used on site as part of a development of 48 flats arranged around a communal backcourt and amenity ground as well as 30 parking bays.

This 'deconstructed' approach omits new construction on Walter Street, establishing a three-sided form, the centrepiece of which will be a rebuilt facade on Marwick Street.

BUT WHY?

I had a deconstructed cheesecake once. It was awful, and I instantly went out and bought a proper one just to make myself feel better. It didn't and now I link the term deconstructed to laziness and a lack of imagination.

This reminds me of that cheesecake, a total disappointment. They built a pointless wall so we could see the functional elevation of this bland structure and shoved a load of car parking on the back just to really insult those who have to look at it. I feel so offended at how bland it is.

@Peter - from the d&a statement: "The open sided layout is designed to maximise the southerly aspect afforded by the site, as well as to create a generous quadrangle space to the interior of the layout; for the purposes of resident’s
amenity space."

Didn’t notice this one before. This proposal massively sucks in all honesty. Just looks half baked, naff. Old facade and brick does not fit at all. Facades propped up on their own in front of the car park looks ridiculous. Either use the whole facade and properly make them fit together or don’t bother at all. The landscaping is also a joke - 30 parking spaces destroys the whole site, should be none - it’s round the corner from a number of busses, shops and the station

More prison style chique, so fashionable these days, either that or a homage to Pink Floyd's magnum opus, maybe a bit of both perhaps?
