Pends and courtyards to turn Merchant City warehouse inside out

New life is to be breathed into Glasgow's historic core under plans to upgrade B-listed offices on the High Street to provide modern workplaces.

London architects de Metz Forbes Knight are working with local practice McGinlay Bell on behalf of Stelmain to deliver the transformation, which will peel back later accretions to reveal the original warehouse character of the Tontine Building.

Unifying the sprawling complex through selective demolition and extensions the complex project will focus on underutilised lanes and courtyards. A new collonade will see the courtyard serve as a key circulation route, lined by new restaurants and bars, with upgrades to the pends and arcades unlocking their potential as alternative public routes through the block.

Internally wrought iron and concrete beams and columns will be exposed in addition to fourth-floor roof lanterns and original fire escapes in the light touch refurbishment.

Outlining this approach the applicant wrote: "Significant interventions over the years have concealed, altered, and detracted from these features, which we would like to celebrate and expose where possible as a focal point within the internal spaces."

Facades will be spruced up as part of the upgrade with new timber sash and case windows, fascias and entrance doors.

Interesting stuff -- good to see someone sweat the assets instead of letting them wither on the vine.

Glesga really need to get its erse into gear regarding bringing its lanes and back courts into productive use.

Lots of cheap wins throughout the city if someone can find the imagination and the revenue streams.

Great what a good power-wash will do to transform litter traps and dumping grounds.

I presume they are using London architects because Glasgow architects are at best mediocre?
