Fort William expansion provides key worker housing

The first phase of a Highland housing development has changed hands in Fort William with the completion of 10 properties for social rent.

The first tranche of a broader 300-home Stallan Brand masterplan at Upper Achintore, the properties have been delivered by a partnership between Link Group, the Scottish Government and the Highland Council.

Cllr Glynis Campbell Sinclair commented: “Despite a buoyant economy and tourism market in the Lochaber area, retention and recruitment of staff is a problem due to a lack of suitable housing and can inhibit the economic growth potential of an area, however developments such as this and other Fort William housing projects will help with housing availability."

Colin Culross, Link Group commercial director and managing director of C~urb, said: “These houses will help people and families stay in Fort William, which will be a real boost to the town, as it will mean jobs will remain in the area, businesses will thrive, and those living in these new homes can enjoy a fantastic new home in this picturesque part of Scotland."

Phase one of the development comprising 82 homes is still under construction with a further 27 shared equity and mid-market rent properties set to complete in March. The remaining 45 homes, all available for social rent, will be completed in June.

Housing minister Paul McLennan added: “Increasing housing supply is a key pillar of Housing to 2040, that will also help alleviate fuel poverty and reduce homelessness."

The development has been underway since 2022 at the hands of JR Construction, TSL Construction and Capstone Construction.

Not quite getting it -- supporting economic activity by way of rent subsidies.

What about the rest of the population forced to fend for themselves?

Some mistake surely -- would it not be better to do more shared ownership and offer a state supported mortgage interest rate through a local credit union?

Then you have the travel conundrum -- the renters will need a 4x4 or a team of huskies to get about in the winter.

Plus the location -- FW's own South-Easterhouse stuck on the periphery half way up a hill.

Seems all very self indulgent.

I wonder when the first one will turn up on Air BnB?

Build economics -- 2022 numbers

82 units @ £290K each.
Mainly 3 bed semi's and 2 bed cottage flats.

60% of the funding through grants and public investment.

Does the Lochaber tourism sector need this level of support?
