Lottery funding sought to keep HMS Unicorn afloat

An application for first-phase funding to protect and conserve HMS Unicorn has been made to the National Lottery Heritage Fund as part of a feasibility study by the Unicorn Preservation Society.

The former Royal Navy frigate could be moved to a new berth at East Graving Dock as the centrepiece of a new Maritime Heritage Centre. Dramatic visualisations prepared by LDN Architects illustrate the £26m Project Safe Haven, a bold bid to arrest and reverse further decay of the historic ship from 2030.

Relocating the vessel to a dry dock will be crucial to these plans amidst warnings that without urgent action the condition of the boat could become critical within 10 years. To stop the rot a giant covering is planned for the ship, protecting it from the elements and preventing further rainwater ingress.

Alongside the fully functional dock a heritage centre is planned, permitting relocation of the museum from the vessel itself to facilitate ongoing conservation efforts.

The Society is hopeful that £13m can be secured from the National Lottery and Tay Cities Deal, leaving it with a £13m shortfall to close through private donations.

Vasa Museum we all deserve. A garden shed for mere £26m. Well done to all involved!
