Zero carbon Greenock distillery plays the long game

Inverclyde's first zero-carbon whisky distillery, seven years in the making, has begun construction - the culmination of seven years of planning.

Ardgowan Distillery in Greenock has awarded the £7m build contract to Muir Construction with phase one completion scheduled for next year.

Modelled on a Nordic long hall the striking design harnesses composite cladding, timber and steel to resurrect the old Ardgowan Distillery, bombed during the Second World War, in modern form.

Alan Muir, joint managing director at Muir Construction, commented: “Not only will this be at the forefront of distilling fine whisky, but it will also be an outstanding statement in visual design, something I’m sure we will all be proud of on completion."

Overseen by Austrian architects Spitzbart and Partners in partnership with Heriot-Watt University and Briggs of Burton engineers the distillery employs novel technologies to capture all CO2 from the fermentation process and transform it into green biomethane.
