Town centre living drive to bring new life to Musselburgh

Housebuilder Dundas has launched 180 apartments on the banks of the River Esk in Musselburgh with the completion of a mock-up apartment.

The Wireworks will rise on the site of the former Brunton's Wireworks, arranged around landscaped space to create a sustainable community that respects the industrial character of the site and embraces town-centre living.

The £35m development has been designed by Michael Laird Architects with each apartment featuring a balcony and open-plan living spaces. In a promotional pitch project architect Jeremy Scott said: "The references to the built form of the Victorian sheds of the wireworks in terms of the narrow plan forms, pitched roofs and articulation.

"Scotland used to have a lot of brick manufacturing in the central belt. We've reverted the architecture to pick up on these features so the buildings are predominantly brick and feature gables harking back to industrial roof forms."

"Residential design gets targetted as 'cookie cutter', a stamp that goes down. As a practice, we don't do that."

The historic Brunton's Wireworks was closed in the 1990s.
