Vertical student city to rise at Charing Cross

Plans for a vertical student city in Glasgow's Charing Cross district are expanding with Vita Group picking up India Street's eastern edge at a first public consultation.

The student specialist proposes to mix up high rise student housing with a separate block of affordable homes, together with private internal and external amenity and an upgraded public realm, complementing other similar proposals.

Repairing a streetscape shattered by the construction of the M8 the project will reinstate lost formal street edges and introduce a landscaped pedestrian friendly backcourt. Hitting the street with an elevated landscaped plinth the development will complement an emerging Watkin Jones scheme by punching above the roofline of the Scottish Power HQ.

In a sustainability statement Vita Group wrote: "The aim is to create a landmark development that will incorporate sustainable design principles into the development process, such as energy-efficient technologies and green infrastructure, supporting Glasgow’s goal of becoming a carbon-neutral city. There will be careful thought for planting and landscaping throughout, with greenery and landscape features creating a place to relax and spend time."

A planning application is expected in November.

Let's see if the Blythswood and Broomielaw CC, Angus Millar, Christy Mearns and the other usual suspects still object to scheme with an affordable housing element or if this is where they finally have their "are we the baddies?" moment

Do we know who the designers are yet?

Iceni Projects are handling the consultation at this stage. They haven't responded to a request to provide architect details.

Vita does have an existing relationship with CDA at their sister New Waverley site.

No more student accommodation!
There are at least a dozen sites now wanting to create student accommodation the city centre. Time for the Scottish Government to uplift the funding to Scottish universities that pay for our population to attend university to reduce the reliance on international students.
