Wyndford battle enters decisive phase as demolition approved

Wheatley has won planning consent from Glasgow City Council to proceed with the demolition of four tower blocks at Wyndford Road, Maryhill.

The property management group has been cleared to bring down each 26-storey tower explosively, with crushed material used to infill the flood-prone landscape to a height of 0.85m, gently graded to follow the contours of the site. Safedem will conduct the delicate operation, ensuring that adjacent homes can remain occupied throughout the works.

It is hoped that subsequent redevelopment could deliver up to 300 affordable homes.

In a methodology statement, Safedem wrote: "... our computer modelling and dynamic loading software has demonstrated that all four blocks can be demolished by explosives. From this modelling the potential blast floors are on levels 1; 2; 7; 12; 17 and 22 with the extent of the potential exclusion zones around the blast area indicated at 120m in red rings and 150m in amber rings."

To compensate for the loss of 33 trees as a result of this process Wheatley pledged to plant 50 new trees across the Wyndford Estate.

Campaigners against demolition are not giving up the fight, vowing to pursue a judicial review of the project on the basis that neither the council nor the Scottish Government conducted an environmental impact assessment.

Fears have been raised that the tight positioning of homes could expose neighbouring properties to the risk of damage.

The site is not prone to flooding. It sounds like an excuse to put a huge quantity of crushed unnecessary dirty waste into the ground to save money on a project that does not stack up financially or environmentally anyway.
