Glasgow extends Avenues programme to Sauchiehall and Cambridge Streets

Glasgow City Council has awarded a £5.6m contract to deliver the next phase of its Avenues programme to Maclay Civil Engineering.

The Airdrie-based firm will undertake a series of public realm improvements to Sauchiehall and Cambridge Street, threading into an expanding network of pedestrian-friendly active travel routes across the city centre.

Stretching from Rose Street to West Nile Street with a spur to Cowcaddens Road the work will deliver improved paving, kerbs, traffic signals and lighting as well as a promised 40 new street trees.

Councillor Susan Aitken, leader of Glasgow City Council, said: “The Avenues programme - the biggest project of its kind in the UK - will not only bring a more attractive environment for everyone in the city centre, but improve connections around the area and encourage more walking, cycling and wheeling. This latest Avenue, on Cambridge Street and a stretch of Sauchiehall Street, is a key part of the network, and will bring particular benefit to a part of the city that will undergo tremendous change in the coming years.”

Work is expected to commence in September for completion by summer 2024.

The lady in the white jacket has just jumped to light speed, matching the millennium falcon's top speed of top speed is 25,000 light years per day

Looks like we're getting more concrete for our glutes if the visualisations are to be believed. A sure sign that the needs of the mobility impaired, the elderly and mums-to-be have been overlooked again - much like the scandalous new Sighthill bridge with its lack of handrails, DDA non-compliant ramps and of course the ubiquitous concrete benches which are a delight to sit on - especially in mid-winter.
Looks very much the lightest of light touches for Sauchiehal Street with - I assume most of the current surface retained or renewed and the same with the trees.
Is there an up-to-date application that we might consult UR?

Would love to see some up-to-date visuals to, these ones show the same paving stones and very little change! I am hoping they are a bit more ambitious with this than the images suggest!

It's a pity the council can't keep the streets clean.

I agree, they'd be better of spending money sorting how refuse bins are hidden in public spaces, picking up litter, properly cleaning stone finishes, and of course maintaining / repairing elements of streetscape that are broken. It's too often dispairing to see how previous attempts have been left to rot...

Let's at the very least hope the workmanship has improved - after only a few years the pavers are already coming up in Sauchiehall Street and puddles form as they are so badly placed with no account to drainage. Fundamental stuff - shocking.
