Mackintosh disaster anniversary marked in watercolour

Architect Alan Dunlop has lamented the looming fifth anniversary of the second Glasgow School of Art fire with a poignant depiction of the fateful night in vivid watercolour on tinted paper.

The 15 June fire of 2018 halted efforts to rebuild the structure from an earlier 2014 fire, from which the building has still not recovered, prompting efforts to focus minds on the best path forward.

Dogged by controversy, the Mackintosh restoration faces calls to go back to the drawing board with a new architect-led procurement process and put the project back on track.

Subject to an inconclusive investigation by the Scottish Fire & Rescue Service, which drew no firm conclusions, the ongoing episode casts a pall over today's 155th anniversary of Charles Rennie Mackintosh, widely regarded as Scotland's greatest architect.
