SWG3 reach for the sky with a landmark hotel

Independent venue SWG3 has shared its hotel vision for a former galvanisers' yard and warehouses which now serve as a cultural hot spot.

Planned for newly acquired land at Sandyford Street, Yorkhill, the hotel is subject to pre-application consultation, joining a host of additions and improvements to the burgeoning events campus.

Of a different scale than earlier interventions the hotel is intended to establish an active gateway and public space at the entrance to Eastvale Place, bookending recent public realm enhancements.

Arranged across three distinct stacked volumes; front-of-house spaces, bedrooms and a rooftop restaurant, the accommodation is arranged over 14 levels including a lofty penthouse for well-heeled guests. More than just a hotel the block will also host a canteen, events area and co-working rooms.

In a placemaking statement Stallan-Brand wrote: "As a vista from all three arrival points, it will create a strong connection between the ground floor, the existing railway arches and the enhanced public realm to welcome all visitors and work as a landmark building for SWG3.

"The proposed plan grid creates a rational facade where various sizes of openings and material changes can occur in an interplay of light and texture, whilst reflecting a sense of craft and simplicity."

A planning application will follow this August ahead of a hoped-for start in 2024.

Very forced design vibe -- detailing turned up to 11 to hide / overcome the portakabin basics of the proposal.

Issues with height / over development / impact on its neighbours -- but at least it shows ambition.

Fair play for having the cojones to go so big -- just a case that it has all the subtlety of big block Lego.

Real containers might have been the better way to go.

The sketches look pretty cool - dynamic forms playing the game of architectural Jenga (Push-pullitecture or Sketchupitecture).I like it in the same way as I liked their avant-garde hotel proposal of abstract gew gaws -at Clyde Street (sadly lost in the long conveyor of dead planning apps).

Just make sure the ground floor is active to the street. See Kingston Street @ Buchanan Warf....

The building portrayed in the sketch axonometric is exciting, I like that ... can't we have that?

Budget is the biggest factor, it seems.
