Art Deco facade saved in updated Sauchiehall Street plan

A historic Art Deco 1930s facade on Sauchiehall Street which had been threatened with demolition is to be saved with the publication of updated designs for student accommodation.

Revised designs by Matt Brook Architects show the former M&S store frontage preserved as part of a student-led mixed use scheme that will house 600 people on its upper floors.

As before the scheme will reinstate the historic Wellington Arcade, reintroducing a direct pedestrian link to Renfrew Street lined by ground floor commercial units.

Brodie Berman, acquisitions at Fusion Students commented: “We believe the updated designs pay homage to the city’s architectural heritage and we are excited to bring forward the plans, which will help address the shortage of beds for the city’s student population and regenerate this part of Sauchiehall Street."

Full details of the latest design will be published tomorrow on the project website in tandem with an in-person meeting at the Maldron Hotel between 14:30 and 19:00.

This is amazing news! The city center needs any charm and interest retained wherever it can! However, the ease with which this change was adapted to, does make you wonder how many amazing buildings were mindlessly wiped away without need!
