Brownfield Aviemore Primary site to host 14 affordable homes

The site of the former Aviemore primary school is to house 14 cottage flats and semi-detached affordable homes under new plans filed by Colin Armstrong Architects.

Accessed from Grampian Road the brownfield site sits below the busy A9 within an area characterised by suburban development.

In a planning statement, the architects wrote: "The buildings are set out in a rational and efficient layout with building entrances easily recognisable and apparent upon approach. This has been emphasised by building massing, including entrance canopy/porch and change of materials at entrance zones. Parking is arranged into clearly defined courtyards that are positioned within well-overlooked spaces to encourage natural surveillance and avoidance of ‘dead space.’

"The raised nature of the houses has the fortunate consequence that natural surveillance is enhanced across the existing streetscape."

The linear row of white render homes will be broken up by areas of charcoal-coloured timber-effect cladding and feature entrance doors.

An existing parking court to the front of the building is also to be remodelled and landscaped.

straight parallel lines; no flow in a landscape made for curves; haven't advanced since suburbia was tried in the 1980s.
