B-listed clay pipe factory gives the Barras a lift

A B-listed former clay pipe factory in Glasgow's east end is to be developed for the public good after Regeneration Capital Grant Fund agreed to bankroll its conversion.
Brokered by The Friends of the Pipe Factory, a community interest company whose members include INCH Architecture, the deal protects the Italian Renaissance-style building on Bain Street.
INCH has been intimately involved in the project since winning a competition to preserve the Bain Street building with Mark Kilkenny Architects, initiating the sensitive upgrade of roofs and windows to protect the building from the elements in 2015.
More recently, the practice has provided project management and design guidance for the next phase of development which will refashion the factory as a hub for social tenants and member organisations.
In a statement INCH wrote: "Following the successful retention of the building for delivery of social outcomes, and the design of the Architectural vision, INCH Architecture will now step aside to permit the delivery of the architectural design by others, enabling INCH to act in their capacity as a member of the client body."
Proposals seek to improve access to all floors of the building through the installation of an external lift, minimising disruption to existing floorplates while creating a new entrance and public frontage.
