Glasgow's B-listed Guildhall set for an industrial restyling

Glasgow's historic Guildhall is in line for a major makeover under new plans filed by Morgan Architects with planners.

Maya Capital propose to redevelop the lower, ground, first and second floors of the B-listed block dating from 1900; including internal refurbishment of office space and a renewal of the main atrium and reception.

Works include the removal of suspended ceilings to expose the vaulted floor structure as well as decorative beams and columns. The lower ground floor will also be remodelled to incorporate 100 cycle spaces, toilets and changing facilities.

In a design statement Morgan wrote: "With the removal of the suspended ceiling and increase in floor-to-ceiling height by exposing the existing soffit, the goal is to allow as much natural light into the floor plates a possible. Blank spandrel panels were introduced to the existing windows when the suspended ceiling was installed and the proposal seeks to remove these where possible and re-instate the clear glazing."

Non-original marble cladding at the entrance will be stripped out and replaced with timber and a ramped seating area will replace a dead space behind the front reception desk.
