Kirkcaldy shopping centre to make way for 300 homes

A failed shopping centre in Kirkcaldy is to be bulldozed as part of a £50m vision to deliver 300 town centre apartments.

The Kirkcaldy Centre, now owned by property development firm Evergold, closed last summer after 40 years of trading and demolition of the three-acre site has already been approved.

Purchased in 2019 for £320k the site will be sold to another developer following its demolition for the delivery of a series of apartment blocks, landscaped walkways and public spaces.

Evergold director Tahir Ali said: "Our redevelopment in the heart of Kirkcaldy should help attract other investors to progress their own plans for restaurants, more national chains, cinemas, hotels and other potential developments. “These will help revitalise and regenerate the town centre and attract more people back to the area.”

Initial plans for expanded retail and leisure offerings were dashed by the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic, which Ali acknowledges has irrevocably undermined the value of large-format retail.

Attempts to rebrand the centre to attract new tenants have fallen foul of a declining market
