Fresh Govanhill apartment bid to deliver 12 homes

Morris and Spottiswood are pursuing a social housing project in Govanhill, Glasgow, comprising 12 apartments for rent.

A design team headed by Mast Architects propose to bring a brownfield site at 17 South Annandale Street back into use for the first time in 20 years by erecting a tenement-scale block arranged around a common close.

The 0.89-hectare yard sits within a largely tenemental district but mediates with a series of garages to its immediate south. Achieving a density of 190 dwellings per hectare the four-storey building sits under a mono-pitch roof crowned by a brick 'high forehead'.

A laurel hedge will be planted at street level, combined with half-opaque windows to provide a measure of privacy for elevated ground floor apartments.

In a design statement Mast observed: "The elevations have been designed to reflect the fenestration of the neighbouring blocks with tall windows encapsulated in a feature cladding strip to mirror the scale of the tenement windows."

Communal gardens to the north will be provided, incorporating cycle and bin stores connected to an existing lane.

This wins the prize for the smallest windows pretending to be big windows competition. How mean can you go? Is natural light bad for you?
