New homes set for historic west end school

A historic former school dating from the 1890s at 39 Napiershall Street in Glasgow's West End is to be converted into 24 apartments by Kelvin Properties.

The former Napiershall Street Centre at the corner of Great Western Road and Maryhill Road will be sensitively restored and joined by a new build L-plan block providing a further 25 flats.

Key to the approach of Haus Architects will be the creation of a metal rainscreen rooftop extension to crown the old school.

Marc Taylor, director of Kelvin Properties, said: “Our plans will allow a community to flourish and reinvigorate an incredible building, while protecting the environment and boosting the local economy.

“Glasgow’s west end continues to be a welcoming and highly attractive place to live and demand for properties continues to grow. We’re very pleased to have submitted plans for the redevelopment that would restore this stunning building to its former glory and provide much-needed high-quality homes in a fantastic location. Although the building isn’t listed, we will retain its fantastic architectural features.

“We have also made sure to maximise outdoor space for the residents - we feel the rooftop space will be particularly attractive.”

Subject to planning consent work could get underway by spring 2023.

The two blocks look pretty close together?

Looks good and great to see old schools restored rather than torn down. However, I agree #1, in the first pic they look awfully close together. Can’t imagine light and privacy will be great between them. Don’t they need to be 18m apart?

Just every now and then there's a development that restores faith in architects. The last time it happened there was a blue moon.

Roof gardens, high ground coverage, no surface parking, neighbours who can wave at each other. Looks far too genuinely urban for gcc - it'll be refused.

I attended this school until 1963. I now live in Perth, Western Australia. I am pleased to read that the school building will have another use instead of standing empty. Best wishes to the architects, builders and all involved.

Responding to James Hepburn, the next Blue Moon will be in August 2023. So, maybe this development will help restore your faith.
