Keppie lead delivery of a Bellshill community hub

North Lanarkshire Council has inivted comments on a new community hub in Bellshill that will combine two primary schools and a community centre.

Indicative plans drafted by Keppie Design for Orbiston Community Hub call for the amalgamation of the Sacred Heart and Lawmuir Primary Schools together with a family learning centre, complemented by a new community hall to replace the Joe McKay Centre.

Configured to provide a strong urban edge the campus will adjoin Orbiston bing with accommodation arranged along a central 'street' offering breakout spaces with both schools situated to the rear. Courtyard gardens overseen by Hirst will provide a mix of external teaching and play spaces with a dedicated garden provided for the family learning centre.

Council leader Jordan Linden said: “This exciting development will deliver an inclusive learning environment where state-of-the-art facilities are provided for children, young people and members of the community.

“A further focus on health and wellbeing will ensure this commitment extends to outdoor facilities and these will provide enhanced leisure and recreational facilities for all members of the community."

A live chat with the project team is scheduled for 26 May between 15:00 and 19:00.
