Dumfries & Galloway Council is pressing ahead with a radical shake up of education provision through the closure and relocation of five schools.

The £66m first phase of this project will see Maxwelltown High School, St Ninian's and Lochside primaries and Langlands school for children with complex needs merge within a single north west campus.

Designed by Holmes Miller this has been conceived as a ‘series of contemporary Scottish gables’ terminating in feature windows.
In their design statement the architects observed: “The central ‘Hub’ will act primarily as the shared dining hall during the day, however to the periphery of the hall a variety of smaller spaces are created to allow flexibility and informal use.

"To either side of the hall, tiered ‘hellerup’ stairs are positioned, which will allow informal gathering of pupils for assembly and social interaction.

“These tiered steps, combined with bleacher seating, will create a ‘theatre in the round’, focusing on the Drama Box and allowing the school to gather for assembly and provide an agora space for school plays and prize giving ceremonies.”

Other work in train includes the £26.5m Dalbeattie Learning Campus, work on which is set to begin next month.
