Second stage consultation opens for Shawlands Arcade redevelopment

Fresh plans for the redevelopment of Shawlands Arcade are to be presented by HAUS on behalf of the landowners as a second-stage consultation gets underway.

Arcade owners Clydebuilt LP, co-owned by Strathclyde Pension Fund and Ediston Real Estate, propose to deliver 'extensive' new public space as part of their reimagining of the site as a residential-led mixed-use development.

Neal Jamieson, director of Ediston Real Estate said: “The amount of new public realm will be significantly increased from 17% in the current Arcade, to 50% in our new design. This reflects community wishes for high-quality European style spaces that both locals and visitors can use.

“High volume residential development with low car ownership, is the most sustainable way to address Glasgow’s housing shortage, while also facilitating behaviour change, reducing carbon emissions and mitigating climate change."

Bike storage and car club facilities will be provided on-site to encourage active travel with the current parade of shops to be brought level with Kilmarnock Road, with an emphasis on drawing more independent traders to the area.

The second stage consultation opens on 10 May between 15:00 and 20:00.

To think what was demolished to build this for it to last nowhere near as long as the previous build, great progress achieved. The next attempt may even have a shorter lifespan, the trend is building boxes, nothing in that to say it will stand the test of time, will probably just look like any other homogenous box building in Glasgow these days.. Wouldn't be surprised if this new development was also coated in white render to make it look like a slum within a few years.
