New Town mews to complete the street

A townhouse garden latterly in use as an office car park is subject to plans for new build mews accommodation.

A family home and shared garden are proposed for the backcourt area of 43 Northumberland Street, Edinburgh, by its owner following the conversion of the A-listed New Town property into a single dwelling.

A two-storey house replicating and extending an adjacent historic mews is planned by Alan Couper Consulting in association with D&H Farmer Architects which would see a stone garden wall retained and incorporated within the mews gable.

In a planning statement, the applicant wrote: "The proposed mews has two bedrooms with shower rooms on the first floor and an open plan living/dining area on the ground floor with direct access into the new garden via French doors. Glazed folding sliding doors provide access to the new garden.

"As the proposed mews house is quite compact and space for storage is at a premium, some additional storage space for bulky items, bicycles, surfboards, luggage, garden tools and equipment, is being provided in a basement under the house and part under the new garden with access directly from the garden by stairs. The stairs will be partially covered by a glass walkway to let light into the stairwell."

A paved stone shared garden will include stainless steel raised planting beds, accessible from Northumberland Street North West Lane via an integrated garage.
