Aberdeen's Treetops Hotel felled for housing

Housebuilder Malcolm Allan and Halliday Fraser Munro Architects have come forward with plans to replace the demolished Treetops Hotel in west Aberdeen with 89 homes, 21 of which will be affordable.
The brownfield site sits behind a random rubble granite wall fronting Springfield Road and is bounded by an established tree belt that offers the potential to establish a green pedestrian link to the nearby Hutton Institute.
A mix of townhouses and apartment blocks of up to 6 floors will rise on the cleared site, set back from an area of open space alongside the road. Homes will be finished in off-white render and grey-green cladding panels to emphasise front gables with pewter cladding used to highlight recessed areas and apparent depth.
In a statement, the applicant wrote: "Massing has been developed in such a way that all key spaces have direct frontages to provide passive surveillance and single access, loop road follows a similar street pattern to that found in the well established local residential area.
"Housing units have been designed and thought out with the surrounding woodland in mind to minimise both the visual and environmental impact."
The homes will rise alongside a recent retirement home development designed by the Planning Bureau.
