Go-ahead granted for almshouse-style Ayr apartments

Ayrshire Housing has awarded a construction contract for 31 apartments in Ayr town centre opposite the B-listed Gaiety Theatre, after being given a two-storey haircut.

Scheduled for completion by Spring 2023 the block has been conceived to complement the ongoing regeneration of the Kyle Centre into a mixed leisure hub.

JR Construction will deliver the Carrick Street structure is modelled on a traditional almshouse with robust perimeter walls sheltering a secluded courtyard.

Jim Whiston, Director at Ayrshire Housing, said: “This development, designed by Ayr based ARPL Architects will increase the range of housing in the town centre with its focus on accessibility and adaptability. It also supports South Ayrshire Council’s ambitious plans to revitalise the town centre.”

The main entrance and open aspects have been configured to terminate vistas along Boswell Park.
