Pandemic planning spurs Shawlands hotel expansion

A Shawlands hotel overlooking Queens Park is set for significant expansion under new plans filed by David Bentley Architect.

The Ivory Hotel has earmarked surface car park on Camphill Avenue as annexe accommodation in addition to the refurbishment and extension of the existing hotel, carved out from the bodies of two townhouses to fashion larger rooms, each with a small kitchenette.

This would establish a continuous frontage to the street with 21 additional bedrooms arranged over three floors above a screened semi-subterranean car park.

Setting out the business case for the intervention hotel owers Ivory Holdings wrote: "Now that we know what measures governments are likely to take in the face of subsequent re-infection waves or indeed a new pandemic, it is possible to foresee how the hospitality industry is likely to be impacted and from that conclude that the industry needs to adapt and be ready to rise to those challenges if it is to survive."

As part of the works, a bar and restaurant would switch to operating as a licensed cafe with ancillary food retail. When complete the enlarged hotel would include 32 guest rooms.

Schemes that build over surface car parks and create active street frontages are nearly always a winner in my book
