Canalside care home set for a return to residential use

A former care home at 48 Polwarth Terrace, Edinburgh, is to be subject to residential development led by Yeoman McAllister Architects.

Canal View Care Home sits alongside the Union Canal within the Merchiston and Greenhill conservation area and constitutes an unlisted Victorian villa and modern extension (since demolished).

Proposals call for the delivery of eight apartments spread between the subdivision of the main villa and a subservient new build south wing that replicates the massing of the old wing.

High-quality materials will be employed for this addition including natural stone, slate and timber windows, although the footprint will necessitate felling two protected trees.

A stone-built annexe, boundary wall and railings will all be preserved under the plan.
