Portobello church remodel to emphasise accessibility & flexibility

Proposals to extend and alter St Mark's Church on Portobello High Street to make it more accessible have been filed by LeeBoyd Architects.

The practice will upgrade the B-listed Neo-Classical design to create a flexible community resource, retaining a semi-circular Doric arched porch.

Fabric repairs to the Victorian structure will be complemented by a curved entrance ramp and steps set over the existing to retain the current porch contours.

Twin low-key extensions to the west and east will provide covered access to the lower ground floor and improved fire escape, both of which are finished in ashlar stone and glass below a flat roof.

Interior works will include removal of central steps to the chancel to permit wider usage and creation of private corner rooms concealed behind curved screens.

The lower ground floor will be rebuilt around a connecting passage between east and west access points together with upgraded services.

Access improvements will permit broader adoption of the B-listed chapel by the community
