Richard Murphy Architects helm bespoke Prestonfield home

Richard Murphy Architects have come forward with plans for a detached family home, replacing a disused garage at 82 Dalkeith Road, Edinburgh.

Slotting into an established residential street the plans call for subdivision of the current plot to carve out 393sq/m of development land to house a purpose-built home over three levels.

Split between the front and rear elevations the five-bedroom house will present a frontage of horizontally indented ashlar to the street while the rear elevation, narrowing to afford both properties similar-sized gardens, is almost entirely glazed.

In their design statement, the practice wrote: "The new house design takes its cue from the older of its two neighbours. The elevation is approximately the same proportion although the new house is three stories high, the top storey is recessed. Nonetheless, the roof edge exactly coincides with the height of the cornice of number 88.

"The cross-section shows how two storeys to the rear is matched by three storeys to the front. A dramatic top-lit three-storey high hallway and staircase in the centre of the plan connects all the levels. The living room at level 1.5 connects to the rear garden by a spiral staircase but also via a half level staircase to a roof terrace."

Unfenestrated brick is employed for side elevations.

A portion of the current garden will be sacrificed for the build
