Upside down Tillydrone School enhances education provision

Aberdeen City Council has tabled new plans for a replacement Riverbank School on the site of the former Tillydrone Infant School at Coningham Gardens.

Incorporating a separate and secure early learning and childcare facility the split-level facility will locate teaching accommodation in clusters along the lower floor with common spaces and the principle entrance located above.

In a design statement, the authority wrote: “The building is cut into the landscape with the upper and lower floors both having external access. The building is arranged over three wings which are joined by glass links to feel light and open.

“The west wing has the double-height hall and dining area on the upper floor. The upper floor of the centre wing has the Early Learning and Childcare accommodation and the staff/administration areas. The secure line at the reception area allows for secure access to the Early Learning and Childcare area as well as to the school.”

Open courtyards between each of three wings provide light and views with the upper floor of the east wing has the Early Learning and Childcare external play area.
