University of Edinburgh surface Peffermill sports village plan

The University of Edinburgh has showcased its vision for a ‘sports village’ earmarked for Peffermill Playing Fields as the institution seeks to broaden its range of facilities and activities.

Designed by Reiach & Hall Architects the facility would centre on a 12 court multi-purpose hall alongside dedicated indoor tennis courts, gyms and conference spaces.

A 2.5km exercise route will border the village, which will also house a 573 bed student residence designed by jmarchitects, doubling as accommodation for athletes and spectators over the summer.

Jim Aitken, director of sport and exercise at the University, said: “The venture will allow the University to consolidate existing relations with local and national sports organisations, create new relationships, increase our sports provision and host a greater number of major events.”

Preparatory works ought to get underway by the middle part of next year, subject to planning permission, with completion following for the start of the 2023-24 academic year.

The development is split between a new sports centre and student accommodation

The keeper dived a bit early there and the defence is far too wide. Must be the Napier team...
