Ibrox homes in step with their surroundings

AS Homes have selected the site of a doomed former swimming pool for their latest new homes, a block of 39 flats for social rent at the junction of Clifford Street and North Gower Street, Ibrox.

A former swimming pool annexe at the former Bellahouston Academy the site has been taken on by George Buchanan Architects who have chosen to employ a language of crow step gables in a nod to the history of the site.

The practice wrote: “A recurring design motif across buildings within the locality, the crow step gable is a traditional design feature found in Scottish Baronial architecture.

“The combination of this traditional detail with the proposed contemporary building form and materiality will provide visual interest to the building as viewed from Paisley Road West, whilst avoiding pastiche.”

Finished in blonde sandstone reclaimed from the current buildings together with brick the scheme seeks to serve as a blend of traditional and modern with dominent gables and rusticated ground floor detailing achieved with panels of ribbed brick.
