Housing density upped at the site of a former Glasgow school

Anderson Bell + Christie have returned to plans for new housing on the site of a former school in Glasgow’s east end by upping the number of homes from 40 to 44.

The St Mark’s Primary site has been taken on by Shettleston Housing Association to provide a mix of mainstream and wheelchair accessible homes in a range of flats and houses.

Accommodation will be arranged around two ‘plateaus’ divided by a central retaining wall, the lower of which will be accessed from two shared surface parking courtyards off Muiryfauld Drive with the upper level having its independent entry.

Emphasising design considerations to mitigate against anti-social behaviour the architects wrote: “Each house is set within its own private defensible garden, with flatted blocks sharing a communal garden that is separated from the public. Although open landscaping is a feature to the front gardens, all back gardens are separated from the public by a 1.8m high fence or brick wall. Front gardens also maintain a clear demarcation between public and private through the use of defensible planting.”
Homes will be finished in buff brick with cast stone window surrounds providing articulation to the facades.
