Eildon Housing is to press ahead with 39 assisted living homes within Galashiels in a matter of weeks as part of measures to meet the needs of an ageing population.

Langhaugh Independent Living is backed by Scottish Borders Council and will be delivered by Hart Builders and Assist Design Architects to meet the needs of frail tenants and those in poor health.

To achieve this care staff will be based on-site to assist when needed while allowing individuals to lead as independent a life as possible. Each home will also contain a large double bedroom capable of accommodating a hospital bed together with an en-suite wet room and compact kitchen.

Eildon chief executive Nile Istephan commented: “Supporting our customers in later life is key and building these extra care flats designed specifically to ensure that tenants can live independently in later life, in a safe and secure environment, is a crucial step forward.

“We want to make sure people have the specialist support they need, and we’ll be working with health and social care partners to make that happen. A major part of that work will be providing services that assist those living with dementia which is a key part of our strategy.”

A communal lounge and dining area will be provided on the ground floor with each flat having north to south through views.
