234 Fountainbridge homes secure planning consent

A canalside development of 234 rental properties above six ground-floor commercial units has secured planning consent from the City of Edinburgh Council.

The decision clears the way for Vastint to begin work on New Fountainbridge, a high-density neighbourhood of new streets, public spaces and terraced private gardens all designed to prioritise pedestrians and cyclists.

This approach is evidenced by the provision of a mere 95 car parking spaces set against 528 cycle places, all contained in secure underground bays.

At the heart of the development will be a new public square formed in front of the Leamington Lift Bridge, overlooked by the largest single commercial unit which will serve as the main social hub for the community.

Chris Jetten, development manager at Vastint Hospitality, said: “We worked hard with the design team, architects 3DReid and other consultants for almost three years and it is great to have the entire development consented now.”

“Vastint is intending to hold the assets long term, and our overarching objective is to create a high quality and lively place where people can live, work and enjoy their free time.”

Properties range from three-storey townhouses fronting the canal towpath through to penthouse apartments with roof terraces.

#1 in a proper PRS scheme that's substantially less likely than if they're sold off to individual landlords.
