Delivery gets underway of 97 affordable Leith homes

CALA Homes, in partnership with Hart Builders, have pledged to break ground imminently on a development of 97 affordable homes to be managed by Port of Leith Housing Association.

Split between 82 apartments and 15 homes the affordable housing forms part of the Waterfront Plaza development which will ultimately deliver a further 291 homes for private sale together with 1,500sq/m of flexible workspace units.

A difficult planning history saw planning permission initially refused for the EMA scheme because the brownfield site had been zoned for commercial use, a decision subsequently overturned by councillors.

City of Edinburgh Council Leader, Adam McVey, said: “This development has a strong sense of place and a strong understanding of Leith.

“I’m delighted that such a prominent patch of land in Leith which has been brownfield for so long is finally getting a development our community can be proud of.”

The first tenants are expected to take up residence from May 2021.

Really!?! Is this what we've come to? I mean there is austere, pared back, minimalist design and then there is this mean-spirited dross.

I am very happy this site is being developed out for housing and I think it is a great location but seeing it's massing from that perspective is incredibly blocky.

It is a shame differing heights were not use or a change in materials to break it up, making it almost look like different buildings rather than a massive wall....
