Environmental impact of Midlothian snowsports centre assessed

Midlothian Council has produced an environmental impact assessment to gauge the likely effect of a revamped snowsports, retail and tourism destination as part of an application for planning permission in principle.

Destination Hillend would upgrade the present Midlothian Snowsports Centre to include new leisure options, a food court, glamping accommodation and a hotel, all of which would sit below the roofline of current structures.

Other planned additions include an Alpine coaster, activity dome and a freestyle jump slope extension.

In the process, the authority would seek to establish the centre as a national tourism destination within the Pentland Hills Regional Park, without adversely impacting on the landscape, ecology and amenity for others.

Further consultations are planned prior to the submission of detailed plans for the centre.
