Forgotten Falkirk church reimagined as a flexible community space

3DReid Architects have completed a remodelling of Avonbridge United Reform Church, near Falkirk, to craft a flexible interior capable of accommodating both worship and a programme of community outreach.

In the process the building fabric has been extensively upgraded in support of social gatherings, including catering facilities and an IT suite, supporting the return of religious worship after mounting dilapidation forced it to close its doors.

In a statement the architects wrote: “The levelling of the previously raked floor has facilitated a more flexible space, into which a birch plywood-lined volume has been inserted, containing key ancillary accommodation in the form of a kitchen and toilets. The creation of a new light well, formed in tandem with this, opens up a portion of the roof space, providing a brighter, more voluminous feel.”

The second phase of work is planned for later in the year which will see the old church hall demolished and replaced with a garden.
