Dundee prioritises city centre growth in the latest local development plan
February 19 2019
Dundee has laid out its growth priorities for the coming decade in the form of an updated local development plan, detailing its land use strategy through to 2029.
The blueprint will form the backbone of future planning policy and prioritises the delivery of new homes while protecting existing shopping streets, green spaces and historic buildings.
Will Dawson convener of Dundee’s planning committee said: “It is difficult to underestimate how important the local development plan actually is to what the city looks like going forward.
“It determines what can be built, where and it gives us a framework for taking decisions and making recommendations on applications.”
Land capable of accommodating 2,605 homes across the city has already been identified with a ‘town centre first’ approach; prioritising commercial expansion in the city centre as well as five complementary ‘district centres’ at Albert Street, Broughty Ferry, Hilltown, Lochee and Perth Road.
A further category of ‘commercial centres’ will reinforce a quartet of retail parks spread across the city; namely Kingsway East, Kingsway West, Gallagher and The Stack.
