£14.5m Arbroath shared school’s campus approved

Angus Council has given the go-ahead to a £14.5m shared campus for Hayshead and St Thomas RC Primary schools on the site of the latter in Arbroath.

Designed by Holmes Miller to accommodate both schools in addition to an early years centre the campus will take the form of a 3,360sq/m building of six interconnected elements, signaling entrance spaces by recessing and protruding the massing.
Finished in brick and slate fibre cement weatherboarding with timber composite windows the school departments are arrayed around a central ‘street’.

In a design statement the architects wrote: “The school is designed as a mixture of single and two-storey blocks, reflecting the residential context around it.  The ASN, early years, community and admin areas form the single storey aspects while teaching areas and the hall make up the two storey blocks, creating a strong form and identity for the school.

Construction could begin by the autumn for occupation by February 2020.
